Orientation Basics

  • Where do I go for Periop Orientation?
    • We hold Periop Orientation at the Perioperative Learning Center!  You can learn more about where this is and how to get there using the interactive box above.

Schedule

  • When will I know what my schedule is?
    • If you do not yet know your schedule, Reply All to your welcome email from us and ask your leader if they can provide that for you.
  • Do I need to attend Periop Orientation if it falls on a day that I'm not scheduled to work?
    • Since you are entering a new position, you have to complete all aspects of orientation.  While Periop Orientation may fall on a weekday that you would not normally work, you do need to attend.  You must attend before you are able to provide care in the clinical area.

Tours

  • If I know my way around my work area already from previous experience having been a student or a former employee, do I need to do the tour after Periop Orientation?
    • No!  Let us know if you feel comfortable skipping the tour.  Please note:  currently, only STs and FAs are sent for OR tours after Periop Orientation.  RNs have an additional short lecture and one additional check-off to complete before leaving.

Lunch

  • Can I bring my lunch to Periop Orientation?
    • Yes!  We have a refrigerator and microwaves that you can use.
  • Do you have lunch options on site?
    • Yes!  At Periop Orientation, you will be at the Periop Learning Center at 3401 West End Avenue which has a deli on the 3rd floor, the opposite wing of the building from our suite.
  • Can I get my lunch delivered to the Periop Learning Center when I am there for orientation?
    • We strongly discourage you from getting lunch delivered because of varying delivery times.  If we send you to lunch at 11:30 but your food will not be delivered until almost noon, you will not get to eat during the allotted time.  We will have you busy when you are not clocked out for lunch, and we cannot predict exactly when lunch will be.

Parking & Shuttling

  • Where should I park?
    • Park in the N lot.  Your first week, you will not need to have a permit displayed since you are a new employee.
  • Can I park in the garage at 3401 West End Avenue?
    • You can but we recommend against doing so for a couple of reasons.
For one, if you work on main campus, we may arrange for you to go to the hospital after Periop Orientation so you can have a tour.  The shuttle back to 3401 West End Avenue only runs until 5:15pm pickup from the hospital/5:33pm dropoff to 3401 WEA.
Two, if you are late returning to our building, the 3401 West End Avenue parking garage closes and you may not be able to get out.
However, if you park at the N lot, you can take the Blue shuttle instead of the 3401 WEA shuttle -- the Blue shuttle runs much more often and later and the 3401 WEA shuttle runs every 30 minutes.
